Falmouth Village Scarecrows

Falmouth Village Scarecrows make their appearance again this Fall and Halloween season on iconic Main Street. Over 20 different creative oversize scarecrows are located on the lamposts in front of restaurants, retail shops, the local fire station and several bed and breakfasts in Falmouth Village. The scarecrows went up on October 15th and will remain until late November.

Each year the members of the Falmouth Village Association enjoy showcasing their talents in coming up with a scarecrow character to represent their unique business.

This year some of the unique characters include an oompa loompa scarecrow from Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory located in front of Ghelfi’s Candies, a cocktail serving scarecrow in front of the Quarterdeck restaurant, a leprechaun in front of Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub, and Popeye the Sailor Man in front of The Captain’s Manor Inn. We encourage you to take a stroll along Main Street and enjoy the fun and creative scarecrow’s while you stop in to shop at our local shops and restaurants.

Jazz Stroll

Jazz Stroll 2014 is set for October 3, 2014 in lovely Falmouth Village. This free event takes place at numerous retail and restaurant locations in Queen’s Buyway and along Main Street. Groups performing range from duos to trios as well as quartets and even the big band group Stage Door Canteen at Liam Maquire’s Irish Pub to close out this fabulous night. You might even choose to enjoy a jam session to be held at Jacks located at 327 Gifford Street.

Make a night of it and come for a stroll where you can mix musical pleasure with dinner and dessert or a little retail therapy while on for your jazz stroll.

This evening is one of many events that make up 2014 Jazzfest. One of this year’s highlight performances will be Grammy Winner Catherine Russell who will be performing at Highfield Theater on Saturday, October 4th at 7:30 pm. Russell is celebrated as a genuine jazz and blues singer who can sing virtually anything. Her Grammy was awarded for her featured work on the soundtrack of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. Catherine has performed with Steely Dan, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper and numerous other musical talents.Jazz stroll at Vagabond View

Falmouth Strawberry Festival

The Falmouth Strawberry Festival 2014 will be celebrated on June 21st marking an official start to the 2014 summer season. This is your opportunity to enjoy beautiful Falmouth Cape Cod on the grounds of St. Barnabas church. The church is located across from the historic Falmouth Village Green and a short stroll into Falmouth Village. Save your appetite so you can enjoy lobster rolls, hot dogs and bbq chicken then finish off with scrumptious strawberry shortcake under the tent on St. Barnabas lawn. After indulging your appetite browse the Arts and Crafts vendors, home baked goods sale, plant sale, face painting, dunk tank, and small children’s games. The weather forecasters are predicting absolutely picture perfect weather for the weekend. We make a point of visiting the strawberry festival and filling up on their great bbq chicken while making sure to save room for strawberry shortcake. Our guests love the feel of the falmouth strawberry festivalfestival as it brings them back to a simpler time of town celebrations with good food and entertainment on the lawn. After the festival take some time to walk into Falmouth Village and explore the many boutique shops with unique gifts and perhaps some salted caramels from Ghelfi’s or ice cream for Ben and Bill’s Chocolate emporium. As the weather is predicted to be fabulous perhaps a walk to the beach in in order and less than a mile from St. Barnabas.

Arts Alive

Arts Alive is a free three day event taking place annually in Falmouth Cape Cod. This year the festivities begin on Friday, June 20th and continue through Saturday, June 21st and Sunday, June 22nd.

This year promises to be extra special with over 50 artisans and craftspeople showcasing their wares. From watercolor artists to pottery masters and photographers to stain glass artisans they will ArtsAliveall be on hand to offer you the opportunity to admire their work and purchase a gift for yourself or others.

There will also be over 60 different performances of dance, theater and music to include jazz, folk, fiddle, classical and show tunes. The hours for this year’s festivities are on Friday June 20th starting at 5 pm and continuing until 9 pm, then on Saturday, June 21st from 10 am until 9 pm and finishing on Sunday, June 22, from 11 am until 5 pm.

Highfield Hall Open House

Come to the Highfield Hall Open House and celebrate spring! This free event is open to the public and offers a variety of activities for all ages. Refreshments are being offered courtesy of Atria Woodbriar who is the sponsor of the open house and the spring art exhibitions at Highfield Hall.

Family Fun events from 11:30 am until 1:00 pm include a self-guided Highfield architecture scavenger hunt and fun crafts to make with children’s program teachers.

At 12:30 pm docents Jean Wentzell and Bobbi Miner will host an estate walk of the Highfield property where you can learn about the Beebe family and the expansive property they owned in Falmouth.Falmouth High School Ceramic Birdhouses at Highfield Hall

Highfield Hall art exhibitFrom 1:00pm until 3:00 pm there will be an artist reception for the spring exhibits as well as a painting demonstration, music and refreshments. The artist exhibitions include A House for all Seasons, Ambient Light Domestic interiority, Fragment House and All around the House. A lovely collaboration between Falmouth High School ceramic students and Falmouth Museums on the Green resulted in the exhibition entitled If These Houses Could Talk.

At 2:00 pm enjoy a poetry reading from the new book, Domestic Interiors and then at 3:00 pm relax to Robert Wyatt performing his favorite songs of spring on the grand piano.

Master Chefs teach at Highfield Hall

Master chefs teach at Highfield Hall this spring for the sixth year running. During the months of April through June, a number of local and not so local chefs will be on hand at Highfield, teaching the art of cooking.

Alan Zox personal chef teaches at Highfield Hall in FalmouhOne of the exciting offerings is with Personal Chef, Alan Zox. Allen’s recipes will focus on vegetables and are very much in sync with America’s growing interest in learning to eat less meat. This is a three-part series or you can opt to register for a single class. The classes include demonstrations, tastings and product information. You will learn how to make featured recipes from the award winning cookbook, Jerusalem . Classes are held at 3 PM on April 2, April 23, and May 14.

 

Highfield is thrilled to have Chef Jean-Jacques Paimblanc  demonstrate some of his favorite dishes on April 6 at 1 PM. Chef Paimblanc is a founder of the certificate program in the culinary arts at Boston University along with Julia Child and Jacques Pepin.

Chef Feufeu the Chef/Owner of Bleu Restaurant will host a cooking class at HIghfield Hall in FalmouthJoin admirers of Chef Frederic  Feufeu for a delectable experience. Chef Feufeu is the owner of Blue, an award winning restaurant in Mashpee Commons just a 20 minute drive from Falmouth. This April 27th at 1 pm will mark Chef Feufue’s sixth teaching appearance at Highfield.

During June there are three offerings with different experts in the Seafood Specialties Series.

On Sunday, June 1st at 3 pm a Seafood Specialties Series will be conducted. Linda Depres will be your teacher. Linda spent 40 years in our own Woods Hole at the National Marie Fisheries Service as a fishery biologist. She will provide you with insight into how to choose the seafood you purchase and answer any questions you might have on the art of cooking with fish. This claScallops cookbook event at Highfield Hallss includes wine tastings along with the seafood offerings.

Come to cook on June 8th at 3 pm with Elaine and Karin Tammi who have shared their extensive experience in the cookbook Scallops.  The class will provide instruction, tastings and a wine pairing focused on all you need to know about preparing and cooking scallops.

The third in the Seafood Specialties Series will be held on June 15th at 3 pm with David Shahzade  the owner of Falmouth Fish, a highly regarded local fish market in Falmouth for over 25 years. This class will include seafood and wine tasting and David will talk about endangered species and local seafood.

National Chocolate Month

Ben and Bill's Chocolate Emporium store in Falmouth VIllageNational Chocolate Month is February and it is a time to celebrate for Ghelfi's Candies in Falmouth Villageall of us chocoholics! Pretty much a day does not go by that I don’t have a little bit of chocolate. We are lucky here in Falmouth, Cape Cod that just a short stroll down from The Captain’s Manor Inn on Main Street in Falmouth Village are two great places to satisfy your chocolate cravings.

You may stop in at Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium or Ghelfi’s Candies or like many guests visit and sample both. At Ben and Bill’s many of our guests love the mocha chip ice cream which has the largest pieces of chocolate you can enjoy. A favorite of guests who frequent Ghelfi’s Chocolates are there different flavored salted caramels from milk chocolate to dark or white chocolate and even crème brulee.
You don’t have to wait for Valentine’s Day to search for that special chocolate treat any time this month will do. The healthy benefits of chocolate are being lauded in all sorts of magazines such as Women’s Health, and even the Wall Street Journal had a story.
Chocolate is even being talked about as a superfood. Of course for us chocoholics, National Chocolate Month is not even enough. So if you need a reason to justify why you are eating chocolate why not follow the national chocolate day calendar.

St. Patrick’s Day in O’Falmouth

Come celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in O’Falmouth where everyone has a “bit of the Irish” in them for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.  The fun and activities begin on Friday, March 14th and continue through Monday, March 17th. We encourage you to keep on top of all the activities by liking the Falmouth Village Association facebook page.

Guests will arrive on Friday, March 15th and find a “Luck of the Irish” welcome basket with a number of goodies waiting in their guestroom. Your innkeepers, Trish and Kevin, will host a wine, beer and snack “Irish Reception” in the Inn’s Bistro from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. We encourage everyone to check out Liam Maguire himself serenading diners at Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub just a stroll down Main Street from the Inn.

Saturday will be a great day to scavenge for all the great green dot sales found on all variety of retail goods at the unique shops on Main Street in Falmouth Village. On both Saturday and Sunday you can enjoy traditional Irish Music at Liam Maguire’s with Rossacroo-Na_Loo starting at 3pm and Shanangan’s starting their entertainment set at 9 pm until closing.

Sunday wake up and enjoy a delicious Irish breakfast at The Captain’s Manor Inn before heading out to enjoy festivities of the day such as the Irish Step Dancing Demonstration across from the Inn at the Museums on the Green.

Monday there will be a Hat Parade down Main Street sidewalks to the Village Green.

Holidays at Highfield Hall once again showcases incredible holiday decor in the beautiful historic Beebe family home in Falmouth.  This lovelingly restored 1878 home of the Beebe family has been transformed into a wonderland where top decorators and designers have clamored to showcase their talents in the elegant halls and rooms of Highfield Hall.

For a nominal five dollar admission for adults (children free) you can tour Highfield Hall and learn about its history while getting holiday decorating ideas. A gift gallery will also be featured at this event and will contain items ranging from Hostess gifts & crafts to a wreath sale. In the new Highfield, reading room. the any soldier project will be featured. A tea shop will be part of the festivities with homemade goodies and the brand-new “Highfield Blend” tea.

Some of this year’s special exhibits will include Bill Hendel’s impressive international crèche collection, a Victorian Regina music box with numerous musical desks, a re-creation of a Victorian Christmas parlor and Salley Mavor’s Pocketful of Posies Christmas tree and dollhouse. Just around the corner from The Captain’s Manor Inn this is a favorite place to visit not just during the holidays but all year long!

Falmouth Holiday Market and Gift Gallery

Once again this year, a Falmouth Holiday Market and Gift Gallery will be hosted by the Falmouth Artist Guild at the Falmouth Art Center, located at 137 Gifford St. in Falmouth. The holiday market will run from November 23 until December 23 from 9 AM until 4 PM on Monday s through Saturdays and also from 1 PM until 4 PM on Sundays.

In what has become a favorite annual event, shoppers looking for unique, original, handcrafted gifts will find it at the gift gallery. Featured at the art center will be artwork and original hand-crafted gifts including jewelry, accessories, pottery , lamps, small furniture, sculpture,  quilted or rug hooked items stained-glass, greeting cards, holiday ornaments and hand woven or hand knit items plus much more.

After shopping at the Falmouth Art Center, head-on over to Falmouth’s Village Center and enjoy a wonderful meal at any of a number of great restaurants.
