Sandwich Cape Cod Day Trip

January 5th, 2013 by Trish Robinson

Just a short 1/2 hour drive from The Captain’s Manor Inn, Sandwich was the first Cape town settled in 1637 and its name was based on a seaport in Kent, England. What was a small agrarian community changed dramatically when a Boston businessman Deming Jarvis established a glass factory in Sandwich. The Boston and Sandwich glass company grew to be one of the largest glass makers in the nation.

A must see in Sandwich is the Heritage Museum and Gardens. This is the largest public garden in southern New England and it is located on 100 acres of magnificent grounds on the banks of Shawnee pond. This site is especially famous for their Dexter Rhododendrons as well as numerous daylilies, hostas and hydrangeas. In addition the gardens feature nationally recognized specialty gardens, water features and sculpture.

The heritage Museum hosts three gallery buildings with diverse exhibitions. Our particular favorite, housed in a reproduced Shaker Round Stone Barn, is an automobile gallery featuring more than 30 beautifully maintained antique American automobiles. Another fine collection is the American Art & Carousel Gallery which includes an extensive collection of folk art and a working vintage carousel from 1908.

Another site you should visit is the Sandwich Glass Museum. There are displays of more than 6000 different glass pieces created by different glass companies in Sandwich during the 19th and 20th centuries. A highlight of your visit will be the opportunity to view glassblowing demonstrations on site. The glassblowing demonstrations are held daily from 10 AM until 4 PM every hour on the hour.
Other interesting glass shops to visit in Sandwich are listed below:
• McDermott Glass Studio & Gallery (272 Cotuit Road, Sandwich, Ma 02563)
Closed Monday, Gallery Tue-Sun 10-5, Glassblowing Thu-Sat 10-5
• Glass Studio on Cape Cod (470 Route 6A, East Sandwich)

The video shoot took place this past spring and the final product has now been created and lives on  YouTube!  We hope you enjoy this 56 second video trip to Falmouth (of course the shooting took place over a very full day…the magic of editing).

How exciting to have been at the “soft opening” of the brand new building at the Falmouth Historic Society.  It is absolutely beautiful both inside and outside.  It is always wonderful to have our community working together and for this special event Carol Chittenden of Eight Cousins bookstore coordinated with Mark Schmidt of The Falmouth Historic Society to bring the New York Best Selling Author BA Shapiro to the Historic Society for readings and background on The Art Forger novel.

In May, the paperback version of The Art Forger will be out and Ms. Shapiro will return to Falmouth for a book event at Eight Cousins bookstore.  The event will include a tour of the bookstore basement catacombs where Carol Chittenden will share some lore about a possible connection to Falmouth and the famous Isabella Stewart Gartner museum art heist featured in the book.

Martha’s Vineyard Day Trip

May 4th, 2012 by Trish Robinson

Oak Bluff's Gingerbread Houses

One of the most popular Day Trips for our guests is a visit to Martha’s Vineyard during their stay with us.   They love that the island is located only seven miles off the Massachusetts coastline and it is only a 45-minute ferry ride from Woods Hole, Falmouth. We invite you to scroll down for a brief video, as well as some pictures of the Vineyard and a sample itinerary.

There are many ways to get around and explore the island.  For example you can use the Martha’s Vineyard transit authority bus system where for $7,

Red Chair Travels | Cape Cod

April 29th, 2012 by Trish Robinson

Sunken Garden

Quintessential Falmouth Village Main Street

The Red Chair has continued on its journey of a Better Way to Stay in Cape Cod and has arrived at The Captain’s Manor in in Falmouth.  What a wonderful time visiting some of Cape Cod’s great landmarks including lovely Inns , museums, eateries, beaches, and quaint villages such as Falmouth Village’s main street.

What I found as we chaperoned the chair is that it is famous !  When we went over to the Queens Buyway shops a local bicycle rider yelled out “Is that THE red chair” and we were happy to reply it sure is!  The next stop was Ben & Bill’s Chocolate emporium where one of the staff made a point of going to get the local paper and show the rest of her co-workers the article that had been written.  I had no sooner arrived at Highfield Hall and was taking the chair out for its picture in the sunken garden when two of my favorite people from the Hall, Janet and Pat,  came out and said they were just taking about the Red Chair the other day and saying wouldn’t it be great if it made a visit here.  Off to the Visitor Center where the cry went out “The Red Chair is here”.  My personal favorite was after taking some great shots over at the Nobska Lighthouse a gentlemen made a point of jogging over from across the street saying he just had to see what the fuss was about with THE Red Chair.

Some of our favorite pictures were at the Nobska Lighthouse and Highfield Hall.  Also check out our full gallery of pictures on facebook and our movie on youtube

Osprey in flight

What a great morning for a walk.  Decided to go to Woods Hole which is a 3.5 mile walk from the Inn.  Although it was a bit overcast it did not seem to bother the ospreys and other critters out an about.  One of the great things about a walk down to Woods Hole is that once you get there you can turn around and walk on back (after a treat at Pie in the Sky) or you can decide 3.5 miles was enough and hop on the Steamship Authority shuttle bus and hop a ride back to the parking lot just a short half mile stroll from the Inn.  Guess what we did :)
