Old Whaling Church Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard

February 23, 2011 by insideout

Many of our guests love to visit Martha’s Vineyard for a day during their stay at our Cape Cod bed and breakfast.ย ย  This week we learned of some work being done at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown that we thought we would share. ย  A couple of weeks ago a crane was brought in and the Main Street area around the Church in Edgartown was closed for three hours in order to remove the 1,500-pound bronze bell from the tower of the Old Whaling Church and send it in for repair.

This is the first time the bell, cast in 1843 in the Boston foundry of Henry N. Cooper & Co., has been down from the tower.

The plan is to have the bell back in place and chiming the hours in Edgartown before Memorial Day.
